Finished! Animal Farm

Animal Farm is one of those books that many read in high school. I did. That’s the only time I read it, but I remember liking it. I was one of the few who did, which wasn’t outside the norm. Years later I finally read it again and I still like the book!

This is one of the few books that I can easily see the underlying message. Orwell makes no attemp to hide that he’s satirizing Russia and Communism.

Animal FarmOne thing that I find amusing is how the pigs, after Snowball is gone, keep making small changes in their favor. Take the Commandments for example. They start out:

1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
3. No animal shall wear clothes.
4. No animal shall sleep in a bed.
5. No animal shall drink alcohol.
6. No animal shall kill any other animal.
7. All animals are equal.

Then a few of the are added to:

1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
3. No animal shall wear clothes.
4. No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets.
5. No animal shall drink alcohol to excess.
6. No animal shall kill any other animal without cause.
7. All animals are equal.

It’s interesting how they changed three to suit their purposes. Then, later, to avoid breaking the remaining four, they simply change it all to:

ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL
BUT SOME ANIMALS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS

It’s so sad how many of the animals place their trus in the pigs, only to be used. Only Benjamin seemed to know what was going on. And he saw that there was no point in trying to convince the others. The sheep were a nice touch. Being those who blindly follow and drown out any questions, concerns, or doubts from others.

What started out as a great idea failed miserably due to greed. I honestly think that if Snowball had remained in charge, it would have worked.
